Meghan Markle is paying tribute to the 19 students and two teachers killed in the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School on May 24.
Two days after the horrific event, the Duchess of Sussex traveled to Uvalde, Texas, where she was photographed placing a bouquet of white roses at a memorial outside the Uvalde County Courthouse on May 26. Markle was also seen walking around the memorial, which was marked with each of the victims’ names, including fourth-grade teacher Eva Mireles.
“My sweet mommy, I will miss you forever,” Mireles’s daughter Adalynn Ruiz wrote in a heartbreaking tribute to her mother on Twitter. “I will forever say your name so you are always remembered, Eva Mireles, 4th-grade teacher at Robb elementary who selflessly jumped in front of her students to save their lives.”
Prince Harry did not make an appearance at the memorial. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been married since 2018 and have two children: three-year-old Archie and 11-month-old Lilibet Diana. In March 2022, the former senior royals took a step back from their positions and moved to California, where Meghan Markle was raised.
The tragedy at Robb Elementary School marks the 27th school shooting this year and occurred just days after a gunman killed 10 people at a grocery store in a predominantly Black neighborhood of Buffalo.
“How does this make sense to anyone? These are our children,” Jimmy Kimmel said at the top of his late-night show on May 25 after directly addressing Republican leaders in Texas including Greg Abbott, John Cornyn, and Ted Cruz. “This is now our fault. Because we get angry, we demand action, we don’t get it, they wait it out, and we go back to the lives that we should rightfully be able to go back to. But you know who doesn’t forget it? The parents of the children at Sandy Hook, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and now Robb Elementary School. They won’t forget it.”
