Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will officially be the first Black woman justice to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States, and Michelle Obama couldn’t help but feel “a sense of pride.”
On April 7, after the U.S. Senate voted 53 to 47 in favor of confirming Justice Jackson to the position, the former first lady and lawyer shared her reaction on Instagram and Twitter.
“I was so moved to see Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson confirmed this afternoon. Like so many of you, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride—a sense of joy—to know that this deserving, accomplished Black woman will help chart our nation’s course,” she wrote. “So many women of color now have a new role model to look up to as she serves on the highest court of the land. Thank you, Justice Jackson, for giving Black girls and women everywhere—including my daughters—a new dream to dream, a new path to forge, and a future we can all be hopeful for.”

Of course, Obama was not the only high-profile woman celebrating this historic moment. “Congratulations to Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman and first public defender on the Supreme Court,” tweeted Hillary Clinton. “Without the commitment of voters and organizers to take back the Senate and White House, this historic moment might not have happened. Well done. Onward.”

While the confirmation news is currently trending on Twitter alongside the hashtag “#JusticeKetanjiBrownJackson,” many celebrities and politicians took the opportunity to mark the occasion. “Congratulations to Ketanji Brown Jackson on her historic and well-deserved ascension to our nation’s highest court,” singer John Legend wrote on Twitter. Kerry Washington simply tweeted, “KETANJI BROWN JACKSON. That is all.”

We’re sure that there are more celebrations of the historic confirmation to come in the coming days. In the words of Stacey Abrams, “Congratulations, America!”
