Joe Alwyn has always been quiet regarding his relationship with singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. Despite being linked since 2016, neither party has spoken (or in Swift’s case, sung) much about the romance, and by the looks of Alwyn’s latest interview with WSJ Magazine, new details aren’t coming any time soon…at least not from the sources themselves.
In a new profile for the magazine, the Conversations With Friends actor opened up about his decision to keep his personal life out of the spotlight. Over the last few months, a few die-hard Swifties have theorized the pair are engaged. His response? “If I had a pound for every time I think I’ve been told I’ve been engaged, then I’d have a lot of pound coins.” (Ah, the British.)
The actor then revealed fans may never know whether or not he and the “Cardigan” singer will be walking down the aisle. “I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn’t say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn’t say,” the 31-year-old said, to the disappointment of Swifties everywhere.
This isn’t the first time Alwyn has pushed back against the expectation that he share details about their romance. After telling reporters in February of this year that he was “very happy in a monogamous relationship” (which is extremely Joe Alwyn of him), the actor opened up to Elle about his frustrations with a celebrity culture that heavily depends on the intrusion of his privacy: “The more you give—and frankly, even if you don’t give it—something will be taken.”
Even though his girlfriend frequently posts about her work on social media, Alwyn says he won’t be posting OOTDs or meal prep anytime soon. “If you’re not posting all the time about what you’re doing, how you’re spending a day, or how you made a breakfast, does that make you a recluse?” he mused.
Between writing Grammy-winning songs together in secret and spending their quarantine going on hikes, it looks like Alwyn and Swift aren’t going to make any big grand declarations of love or give us Kravis-level PDA. Sad.
