If you’ve been wondering, “Is Target open on Thanksgiving?” there’s an official, easy answer: no.
So if you’re in sudden need of a handful of candles on Thanksgiving Day, you’ll have to go somewhere else to buy them. Or wait until 7 a.m. on Black Friday when Target opens for the biggest shopping day of the year. (That’s the earliest stores will open, but check with your local store for their specific Target Thanksgiving hours.)
But Target will not be open on Thanksgiving Day 2022. In fact, Target will not be open on Thanksgiving Day ever again (for now). Last year the retail giant announced it will continue to close its doors on the American eating holiday every year moving forward.
“What started as a temporary measure driven by the pandemic is now our new standard—one that recognizes our ability to deliver on our guests’ holiday wishes both within and well beyond store hours,” Target CEO Brian Cornell wrote in a statement.
In 2020, Target closed on Thanksgiving for the first time in a decade, citing safety concerns during the coronavirus pandemic. But then the retail giant decided to make the move permanent. It also started offering discounts for the holiday shopping season earlier instead of reserving those deals for Black Friday. (Don’t worry, we’ve rounded up the best early Target Black Friday deals for you.)
Target is not the first major retailer to make this change, and it probably won’t be the last. While the change to Walmart’s Thanksgiving hours isn’t as sweeping—no commitment to “forever” here—the company was closed the past two holidays and has confirmed it will be continuing that new tradition.
So yes, Target stores are closed on Thanksgiving 2022—and every year going forward. Stay home and watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade. And if you’re too cozy to even make it out for Black Friday, that’s fine too: Target is offering weeklong Black Friday deals now through November 25, with new savings debuting each Sunday. And there are always those Target Cyber Monday deals.
